State University of New York Maritime College, also known as simply SUNY Maritime College, is a four-year college located at historic Fort Schuyler in Throgs Neck, in the southeastern portion of the borough of the Bronx, which is New York City's northernmost borough, the only borough located primarily on the mainland, housing within its limits a number of more than 1 300 000 people, as estimated during the 2009 census, making it the fourth-most-populated of the five boroughs, the fourth-largest in land area, and the third-highest in density of population.
SUNY Maritime College was established in 1874 and it was the first college of its kind (federally approved, offering commercial nautical instruction) to be founded in the US. It offers its students `undergraduate and graduate degrees in the following areas: Engineering (Marine, Mechanical, Electrical and Facilities), Naval Architecture, Marine Transportation/ Business Administration(minors in Ship Management and Maritime & Port Security), Maritime Studies, Marine Environmental Science (minors in Marine Biology and Meteorology & Oceanography), Humanities, International Transportation and Trade, and a Master's degree in International Transportation Management.`
The athletic teams from SUNY Maritime are known as the Privateer(s), and they compete in 20 varsity sports, represented by eight athletic conferences including: The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Skyline Athletic Conference, Eastern College Football Conference (ECFC), Metropolitan Rugby Association, Metropolitan Hockey Association, U.S. Rowing, U.S. Sailing, and the Mid-Atlantic Conference. Their distinctive colors are Maritime Blue and Privateer Red.
Commander Kevin Mannix, United States Navy, Flight Leader and Commanding Officer, Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team, and Scott J. Kelly, NASA astronaut, are among the noteworthy graduates from SUNY Maritime College.
